Blizzard Calls the Shot on Diablo 5 for 2029

Blizzard dated Diablo 5 to spring 2029 at BlizzCon, ended Diablo 4 expansions, and bet a fallen Sanctuary plus classic loot can reset the series.

Blizzard dated Diablo 5 to spring 2029 during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on September 12, and the teaser put the Lord of Terror on a throne he already holds. The sequel, styled Diablo V, is set 100 years after Diablo 4 in a Sanctuary that has already fallen.

Executive producer Matt Zitterman told press the studio was “calling the shot.” The same show ended Diablo 4’s expansion plans and asked seasons, a 2027 class pack, and a Switch 2 bundle to carry the series until that window.

Blizzard Is Calling Its Own 2029 Shot

Senior game director Joe Shely put the premise in one line on the main stage: “The heroes are gone, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won.” Senior production director Tiffany Wat followed him. That changes how you survive, she said, and what you are willing to claim or give up.

The date is the wager. Diablo 4 launched on June 6, 2023. A spring 2029 sequel would arrive six years later, the shortest gap between numbered Diablo games. Platforms were not named. The team still calls the project early. Regular public updates do not start until 2027.

We’re announcing the date, calling the shot, because we’re very confident and that confidence comes from both clarity of creative vision, and clarity of production schedule, and understanding of what our team can do.

Matt Zitterman, Executive Producer, speaking to press after BlizzCon

Zitterman said work on Diablo V has been running beside Diablo 4, on the foundation that game already built, with people who have been making Diablo for decades. He also said a sequel was the only way to change the fundamentals, which is hard to do on a live title that has already shipped several expansions.

The 2029 card is what a trailer crowd snags on first, and it snags as a wait. Replies to the teaser treated the year as a punchline, including a gag about dating Diablo 6 to 2036. Until someone plays a build, the shot is a calendar entry with concept art behind it.

A Fallen Sanctuary and the Heir to Westmarch

Blizzard’s first details of the world and classes start from a loss the series has never used as a launch state. Other heroes rose to stop Diablo, narrative director Jennifer Hepler told the Forging the Next Era panel, and they failed. You walk into the aftermath.

When the campaign begins, Diablo has already ruled for seven years. That clock sits inside the 100-year skip after Diablo 4; it is the length of his reign, not the gap from Lilith’s war. He sits in Westmarch, using people and souls as weapons in the Eternal Conflict, with Heaven as the next target.

You play the Heir to Westmarch, on the run through a kingdom turned into an outpost of Hell. A hidden link to Diablo makes that heir both a threat to him and easy to twist. Few humans got out. Some knelt. A few were raised into Dread Commanders with power that can rival Hell’s own dukes.

Hepler said the team tested a softer reading of the villain and kept dropping it. Diablo is Diablo. He is not misunderstood. The question is what you become after he has already won, which is the line Blizzard printed on the reveal.

Towns Are Gone and the Map Shifts

Diablo 4’s Sanctuary was a fixed open world with towns you learned and reused. Diablo V throws that out. Wat described Diablo and the Dread Commanders reshaping the land, a process the team called Terror Forming. Terrain, points of interest, monsters, and rewards can change when you come back.

Shely’s brief to his own team is that you should never feel quite safe. That is easier, he said, when the towns are gone. Art director John Mueller split the look into three layers: a life-after-people ruin of what was lost, land the Commanders have already burned, and the Hell-break the heir is trying to stop.

D4 AND D5, SIDE BY SIDE

Design choice Diablo 4 Diablo V
World Fixed open map Procedural terrain that can change on return
Hubs Towns and strongholds A growing caravan of survivors
Main villain Lilith, then Mephisto Diablo, already in power
Items Current live-game loot Runes, runewords, sets, multi-slot gear
After launch Two expansions, then seasons only Numbered sequel, still early

With settlements gone, the camp moves with you. Allies act as vendors and companions, and side quests come from people you pick up, not from civilians waiting on a road. The panel named a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin looking for meaning in a world where greed has lost its purpose. Zitterman compared the feeling to the Rogue Encampment in the first Diablo: a fire, a few wagons, and the dark around it.

Loot is being pulled back toward Diablo II. The team is testing stat requirements on gear. Larger items take more bag space. Sets return on the items themselves, with crafting meant to echo Lord of Hatred and to include Diablo II-style runes and runewords. Those tests are still clay. Stat requirements were flagged as unconfirmed.

A shifting overworld answers a long request from players who missed random maps. It can also hide a thin world behind new noise. That objection is already in the open, and Blizzard has more than two years to hear it before anyone buys the thing.

Three Classes on the Road to Launch

Host Johanna Faries brought the Diablo V team out for the afternoon panel. Shely showed three classes and said they are only the first. He also said the game will ship with more classes than any prior Diablo, counting the full roster, not a launch-versus-launch trick.

THE FIRST THREE CLASSES

  • Demon Hunter: Twin crossbows, strikes from the dark, leaps in to pin prey.
  • Monk: Fists and holy power, close-range battering with smite from range.
  • Plague Knight: New heavy class that spreads disease, then eats it for power.

Shely called the Plague Knight walking death. Combat, progression, and builds were held for later. So were the rest of the names on that larger roster.

Diablo 4 Will Not Get Another Expansion

The cost of the 2029 bet sits on the live game. Diablo game director Brent Gibson said the team is focused on Diablo 4 seasons and on getting to Diablo 5. “We feel like we told the Story of Hatred,” he said. “We had a great conclusion with Lord of Hatred with what we have with Mephisto, and we are moving towards telling the Story of Terror.”

Lord of Hatred shipped on April 28, 2026, with the Paladin, the Warlock, and the Isles of Skovos. That is now the end of Diablo 4’s expansion line. The Amazon, due in the first half of 2027, is a class pack, not a third campaign box.

THE ROAD FROM HATRED TO TERROR

  1. June 6, 2023: Diablo 4 launches on PlayStation, Xbox, and Battle.net PC.
  2. April 28, 2026: Lord of Hatred closes the Hatred story on Skovos.
  3. September 12, 2026: BlizzCon reveals Diablo V for spring 2029 and ends the expansion plan.
  4. September 15, 2026: Season of Hell’s Legacy and the Switch 2 collection go live.
  5. First half of 2027: The Amazon class pack arrives, with bow and javelin.
  6. 2027: Diablo V starts regular public updates.
  7. Spring 2029: Dated window for Diablo V.

Gibson said Diablo 4 players are still out there and that support will run a very long time. He pointed at Diablo II: Resurrected, which Blizzard still patches beside the live sequel. Seasons can keep a loop spinning. They are not a new continent, a new act, or a new campaign boss at expansion scale, and that is the gap the next few years have to fill.

Diablo 5 Would Be the Fastest Numbered Sequel

The franchise is in its 30th year. Original Diablo arrived in 1996. Diablo II came in 2000. Players then waited 12 years for Diablo III in 2012, and 11 more for Diablo 4 in 2023. A 2029 Diablo V would cut that numbered-gap pattern almost in half.

Blizzard has said it wants new Diablo games faster. Building on Diablo 4’s tech is the clean reason a six-year cycle is even plausible. The unclean reason is on the other side of the same sentence: the live game has to stay worth opening while a second team spends those years on a sequel you cannot play yet.

Across the franchise, Blizzard says 130 million players have entered Sanctuary. That is a lifetime total, not a count of who is in Diablo 4 this season. It is the audience the studio says it studied before choosing a sequel over another expansion, splitting story fans from build grinders and trying to serve both without bolting a new ruleset onto a three-year-old client.

What Diablo 4 Has to Carry Until 2029

Until spring 2029, the product you can buy is still Diablo 4. Season of Hell’s Legacy starts rolling out on September 15 at 9:30 a.m. PT, three days after the sequel reveal, as the 30th anniversary season. The lost soul of Deckard Cain is back. You hunt Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo, take splinters of their souls, and pay for a piece of that power. The Lord of Terror’s first real turn in Diablo 4 is a season event, not the next boxed campaign.

The same date puts Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection on Nintendo Switch 2 at $69.99 (£62.99 / €69.99), bundling the base game with Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred, plus cross-play and cross-progression. Further out, the Amazon class pack in 2027 returns the Skovos archer with four archetypes: Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger, and Commander, and it adds the javelin as a new weapon type. Blizzard and Netflix are also developing an animated Diablo series, with no date attached.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The window: Diablo V is dated to spring 2029, with public updates planned from 2027.
  • The premise: Diablo rules Westmarch; the player is the Heir, traveling with a caravan.
  • The D4 plan: No further expansions; seasons continue, and the Amazon arrives in the first half of 2027.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Platforms: Blizzard has not named consoles or storefronts for Diablo V.
  • Launch roster: Three classes are public; the full list and its size are not.
  • Systems: Stat requirements, grid inventory, and Terror Forming are still in test.

Zitterman said the early reveal exists so players can argue with the clay. Anyone can sign up for future Diablo V updates on the official site. The first test of the bet is not 2029. It is whether Diablo 4 still feels like a main game on September 15, when a new season and a handheld collection have to stand in for the expansion that is not coming.
