The Powerball lottery game has rolled over again, reaching a staggering $461 million for the Wednesday night drawing. This is the seventh largest jackpot in the history of the game, and the ninth largest in US lottery history. The cash option for the winner is $223.5 million.
How to play Powerball
Powerball is a multi-state lottery game that is played in 45 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each ticket costs $2, and players can choose five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls, and one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball. Alternatively, players can opt for a quick pick ticket with random numbers.

To win the jackpot, players need to match all six numbers drawn. There are also eight other ways to win smaller prizes, ranging from $4 to $1 million, depending on how many numbers are matched. Players can also add the Power Play option for an extra $1, which can multiply the non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 times. The 10x multiplier is only available when the jackpot is $150 million or less.
What are the winning numbers for Sept. 6?
The winning numbers for the Wednesday night drawing were 9, 14, 20, 23, 63, and the Powerball was 1. The Power Play was 3x. The jackpot was not won by any ticket holder, so it will roll over to the next drawing on Saturday, Sept. 9, with an estimated jackpot of $485 million.
The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are about 1 in 292.2 million, while the overall odds of winning any prize are about 1 in 24.9 million.
Where to buy Powerball tickets
Powerball tickets can be purchased at authorized retailers in participating states and jurisdictions. Some states also allow online sales of lottery tickets, but players should be wary of scam websites that claim to sell Powerball tickets. Players do not need to be a U.S. citizen or a resident of a particular state to play Powerball.
The deadline for buying Powerball tickets varies by state, but it is usually one or two hours before the drawing time. The drawing time is 10:59 p.m. ET on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
