Asus is one of the few brands that still makes dedicated gaming phones, and its ROG Phone series is widely regarded as the best in the segment. The ROG Phone 7, launched in 2023, was a beast of a device with a 144Hz AMOLED screen, a Snapdragon 888+ chipset, 18GB of RAM, a 6,000mAh battery, and a host of gaming accessories. But what about the ROG Phone 8? What can we look forward to from Asus’ next flagship gaming phone?
According to the official teaser from Asus, the ROG Phone 8 will debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, which is scheduled for January 5-8 in Las Vegas. The teaser also reveals a new design for the back of the phone, featuring a pentagon-shaped camera module with three lenses and an LED flash. The teaser also hints at a possible rear display panel, similar to the one on the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate.
While the teaser does not reveal much about the specifications of the ROG Phone 8, some leaks and rumors have given us a glimpse of what to expect. The ROG Phone 8 is likely to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which is the successor to the Snapdragon 888+ and is expected to offer improved performance and efficiency. The ROG Phone 8 Ultimate, which is the higher-end variant of the series, has been spotted on Geekbench with a whopping 24GB of RAM, which would make it one of the most powerful phones ever.
Another feature that the ROG Phone 8 series might finally bring is wireless charging. This has been a long-requested feature from ROG Phone fans, as wireless charging is a standard feature of most flagship phones. However, the ROG Phone series has always skipped wireless charging due to the design constraints of the phone, such as the side-mounted USB-C port and the rear display panel. However, a certification from China’s 3C agency suggests that the ROG Phone 8 Ultimate will support 65W fast charging, which could also imply wireless charging support.
The ROG Phone 8 series is also expected to have a high refresh rate AMOLED screen, a large battery, a dual-speaker setup, an RGB logo, and a range of gaming accessories, such as the AeroActive Cooler, the Kunai Gamepad, and the TwinView Dock. The software side is expected to feature Android 14 with ROG UI on top, which offers a lot of customization and optimization options for gamers.
The ROG Phone 8 series is shaping up to be an impressive upgrade over the ROG Phone 7 series, and we can’t wait to see what Asus has in store for us at CES 2024. Stay tuned for more updates on the ROG Phone 8 series as they emerge.
