Taco Bell fans, rejoice! The fast-food chain has announced the return of one of its most popular items: the Double Decker Taco. The taco, which features a soft flour tortilla wrapped around a crunchy taco shell with a layer of refried beans in between, was discontinued in 2019 as part of a menu revamp. But after a year-long hiatus, the Double Decker Taco is back for a limited time starting from December 5, 2023.
The Double Decker Taco was introduced as a promotional item in 1995 and was advertised by NBA stars Shaquille O’Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon. It became a permanent menu item in 2006 and was a favorite among Taco Bell customers for its unique texture and flavor. The taco comes with seasoned beef, lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes, and can be upgraded to a Supreme version with sour cream and diced onions. The Double Decker Taco costs $2.99, while the Supreme version costs $3.69.
Why did Taco Bell bring it back?
Taco Bell said that it decided to bring back the Double Decker Taco after listening to the feedback from its loyal fans, who have been clamoring for its return ever since it was discontinued. The chain also said that it wanted to celebrate the holidays with its customers by offering them a nostalgic treat. “We know how much our fans love the Double Decker Taco, and we wanted to give them a special gift this season,” said Mark King, Taco Bell’s CEO. “It’s the perfect way to enjoy the best of both worlds: a soft and a crunchy taco in one delicious bite.”
How can you get it?
The Double Decker Taco is available at participating Taco Bell locations nationwide, but only for a limited time. The chain has not specified how long the offer will last, but it is expected to run until the end of the year or while supplies last. The taco is also available exclusively on the Taco Bell app for the first five days of its launch, from December 5 to December 10. Customers who order the taco through the app can also get a buy-one-get-one-free deal for the same item.
What else is new at Taco Bell?
The Double Decker Taco is not the only new item that Taco Bell has introduced recently. The chain has also launched a new Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco, which features a piece of crispy chicken marinated in jalapeño buttermilk and seasoned with Mexican spices, topped with creamy chipotle sauce and served in a puffy bread shaped like a taco shell. The sandwich taco is available in regular and spicy versions, with the latter adding crunchy jalapeño slices. The Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco costs $2.49 and is available at select locations in Nashville, Tennessee, and Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of a test run.
Taco Bell has also expanded its vegetarian options by adding a new Veggie Cravings Menu, which features four plant-based items: the Black Bean Chalupa, the Black Bean Crunchwrap Supreme, the Spicy Potato Soft Taco, and the Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito. The Veggie Cravings Menu is certified by the American Vegetarian Association and is available at all Taco Bell locations.
