Charlize Theron, the Oscar-winning actress and Dior spokeswoman, has revealed her biggest beauty regret from her younger days. In an interview with InStyle, the 48-year-old star confessed that she is “still recovering” from the popular ’90s trend of thin eyebrows.
The ’90s glam that haunts her to this day
Theron said that she followed the fashion of over-plucking and arching her brows when she was starting her career nearly three decades ago. She admitted that it was one of the worst beauty decisions she ever made. “Hands down, the thin eyebrows in the ’90s,” she told InStyle. “I’m still recovering from that.”
The Bombshell actress was not alone in sporting the pencil-thin brows, which were seen on many celebrities at the time, such as Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba and Kate Moss. However, the trend has since faded away, and fuller and more natural brows have become the norm.
Theron also recalled that she once dyed her eyebrows so blonde that they were almost invisible. She did this for the 2004 Academy Awards, where she won an Oscar for her role in Monster. She said that it was a “bad idea” and that she looked like an “alien”.
The beauty trend that is making a comeback
Despite Theron’s regret, thin eyebrows are slowly but surely coming back into fashion. In June, InStyle labeled the style as a re-emerging trend, worn by model Bella Hadid. The magazine noted that Hadid’s brows were reminiscent of the ’90s icons such as Drew Barrymore and Gwen Stefani.
However, Theron said that she will not be participating in this trend again. She said that she prefers to embrace her natural beauty as she ages. “My face is changing, and I love that my face is changing and aging,” she told Allure earlier this month.
She also revealed that people have been questioning whether she has had any cosmetic procedures done on her face. She said that she finds it annoying and insulting. “People think I had a facelift,” she said. “They’re like, ‘What did she do to her face?’ I’m like, ‘Bitch, I’m just aging! It doesn’t mean I got bad plastic surgery. This is just what happens.’”
The double standard of aging in Hollywood
Theron also expressed her frustration with the double standard of aging in Hollywood, where men are seen as more attractive as they get older, while women are seen as less desirable. She said that she despises this concept and wants to fight against it.
“I’ve always had issues with that — that men kind of age like fine wines and women like cut flowers,” she said. “I want to fight against it, but I also think women want to age in a way that feels right to them. I think we need to be a little bit more empathetic to how we all go through our journey.”
Theron said that she has learned to laugh at herself and not take things too seriously. She said that seeing her face on a billboard is quite funny now. She also said that she will never dramatically alter her appearance for a movie role again, after gaining 50 pounds for her role in Tully in 2018. She said that it was very hard to lose the weight afterwards, and that her doctor told her to calm down because her metabolism is not what it was when she was younger.
