Johnson County is getting a new addition to its dining scene: a tapas restaurant that will offer small plates, wine, and cocktails in a cozy and elegant setting. The restaurant, called Tapa Toro, will open in April at the Prairiefire entertainment district in Overland Park.
Tapa Toro is a concept by Chef Jose Garces, a James Beard Award winner and Iron Chef America champion. Garces is known for his innovative and authentic Spanish cuisine, which he showcases at his restaurants across the country.
Tapa Toro will be his first venture in Kansas, and he said he is excited to bring his passion for tapas to the area. Tapas are small dishes that are meant to be shared and enjoyed with drinks and conversation. They can range from cold cuts and cheeses to fried calamari and meatballs.
“I love the idea of tapas because it allows you to try different flavors and textures without committing to a large portion,” Garces said. “It’s also a great way to socialize and have fun with your friends and family.”
What to Expect at Tapa Toro?
Tapa Toro will feature a menu of classic and contemporary tapas, as well as paella, salads, soups, and desserts. Some of the signature dishes will include patatas bravas (crispy potatoes with spicy tomato sauce and aioli), gambas al ajillo (shrimp with garlic and sherry), croquetas de jamon (ham and cheese croquettes), and torrijas (caramelized bread pudding with vanilla ice cream).
The restaurant will also have a wine bar that will offer a selection of Spanish and international wines, as well as sangria, beer, and cocktails. The wine bar will have a happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays, with special prices on tapas and drinks.
The decor of Tapa Toro will reflect the Spanish culture and cuisine, with warm colors, rustic wood, and tiled accents. The restaurant will have a dining room that can seat up to 80 people, a private room that can accommodate up to 20 people, and a patio that can fit up to 40 people.
Why Prairiefire?
Garces said he chose Prairiefire as the location for Tapa Toro because he was impressed by the vibrant and diverse community in Johnson County. He said he wanted to be part of the growing entertainment district that offers shopping, dining, arts, and culture.
“Prairiefire is a perfect fit for Tapa Toro because it has a lot of energy and excitement,” Garces said. “I think our restaurant will complement the other attractions and businesses in the area, and create a destination for people who love good food and good times.”
Prairiefire is a mixed-use development that spans 60 acres at 135th Street and Nall Avenue. It features retail, office, residential, and entertainment spaces, as well as a museum, a cinema, and a hotel. Some of the other restaurants in Prairiefire include Rock & Brews, Pinstripes, Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant, and Parisi Artisan Coffee.
When to Visit Tapa Toro?
Tapa Toro is expected to open in April, but the exact date has not been announced yet. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, and for brunch on weekends. The hours of operation will be from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
Garces said he is looking forward to welcoming guests to Tapa Toro and sharing his love for Spanish food and culture. He said he hopes to create a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone who visits.
“I want Tapa Toro to be a place where people can relax, have fun, and savor the flavors of Spain,” Garces said. “I can’t wait to see you there.”
