Florence Welch, the lead singer of Florence + The Machine, has opened up about her recent health scare that required her to have emergency surgery. The 36-year-old star revealed that the surgery saved her life, but did not disclose the details of her condition.
Singer cancels festival gigs due to medical advice
Welch took to Instagram on Sunday (Aug. 27) to apologize to her fans for canceling two of her shows at the Zurich Openair festival and Rock en Seine. She explained that she had to follow the medical advice and undergo an urgent operation that was not related to her previous foot injury.
“I’m so sorry that I had to cancel the last couple of shows. My feet are fine, I had to have emergency surgery for reasons I don’t really feel strong enough to go into yet, but it saved my life,” she wrote in a heartfelt post.
She also thanked her fans for their support and assured them that she will be back to perform the final dates of her Dance Fever tour in Lisbon and Malaga in September.
Singer wishes her songs were less prophetic
Welch, who is known for her powerful vocals and poetic lyrics, hinted that her latest album Dance Fever had some eerie predictions about her situation. She said that she wished her songs were less accurate, but also expressed gratitude for the creative outlet that helped her cope with her challenges.
“Suffice to say I wish the songs were less accurate in their predictions. But creativity is a way of coping, mythology is a way of making sense. And the dark fairytale of Dance Fever, with all its strange prophecies, will provide me with much-needed strength and catharsis right now,” she wrote.
Dance Fever, which was released in May 2022, is the fifth studio album by Florence + The Machine. It features songs such as “The End of Love”, “Hunger”, “Big God”, and “Sky Full of Song”. The album received critical acclaim and topped the UK charts, making it the band’s fourth consecutive number one album.
Singer has a history of injuries on stage
This is not the first time that Welch has faced health issues that affected her tour schedule. In November 2022, she had to postpone the remaining dates of her UK tour after discovering that she had been dancing on a broken foot during a show.
The singer, who is famous for hits such as “Shake It Out” and “Dog Days Are Over”, said that it was not in her nature to cancel a show, but she had to follow the doctor’s orders and avoid further damage.
Welch is also known for her energetic and passionate performances, which often involve jumping and running on stage. She has suffered several injuries in the past, such as breaking her toe in 2011 and dislocating her shoulder in 2015.
