The WWE Universe was in for a treat on Friday night as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson made his long-awaited return to the ring on SmackDown. The Hollywood star and former WWE Champion showed up during the opening segment of the show, interrupting an exchange between Pat McAfee and Austin Theory. The crowd erupted in cheers as soon as they heard his iconic entrance music and catchphrase: “If you smell what The Rock is cooking!”
The Rock greeted his fans with pictures and autographs before entering the ring, where he displayed his charisma and mic skills. He addressed Theory, who tried to talk to him, with a classic Rock response: “It doesn’t matter what your name is!” He then proceeded to hype up the crowd with his signature catchphrases, such as “Finally, The Rock has come back to Denver!” and “Do you like pie?”
The Rock lays the smackdown on Austin Theory
Theory, who seemed starstruck by The Rock, attempted to attack him after a heated exchange of words. However, The Rock was ready for him and countered his move with a spinebuster. He then took off his jacket and delivered his trademark move, the People’s Elbow, to the delight of the fans. He was not done yet, as he invited McAfee to join him in the ring and perform another People’s Elbow on Theory.
The Rock and McAfee celebrated their victory with a hug and a pose, while Theory was left lying on the mat. The Rock then thanked the fans for their support and said he had a big announcement to make later in the show.
The Rock teases a WrestleMania match with Roman Reigns
Later in the show, The Rock appeared on the TitanTron and revealed that he had met with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon and WWE President Nick Khan earlier this year. He said that they had agreed on a match between him and his cousin, Roman Reigns, for WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles. He said that he was “locked” for the match, but it was postponed due to the pandemic.
He then teased that he might face Reigns at WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia, which elicited a huge reaction from the crowd. He said that it was a “potential” destination for the match, but he did not confirm it. He said that he would keep the fans updated on his plans and that he was looking forward to facing Reigns in the future.
He ended his segment by saying that he loved the WWE Universe and that he would see them soon.
