Samsung has announced that it will launch a new mobile AI experience called Galaxy AI, which will offer a range of AI-powered features and services to Galaxy smartphone users. One of the key features of Galaxy AI is the AI Live Translate Call, which will enable users to have real-time phone conversations with people who speak different languages, without the need for any third-party apps.
According to Samsung, Galaxy AI is a comprehensive mobile AI experience, powered by both on-device AI developed at Samsung and cloud-based AI enabled by its open collaborations with like-minded industry leaders. Galaxy AI will transform the everyday mobile experience with the peace of mind users count on from Galaxy security and privacy, Samsung said.
Samsung claims that no company can harness AI’s potential like Galaxy, because only Galaxy puts the power of openness in the palm of your hand. Galaxy AI will bring users closer to a world where some of the most common barriers to social connection dissolve, and communication is easier and more productive than ever, Samsung added.
Galaxy AI is expected to debut on the latest Galaxy AI phones, potentially the Galaxy S24 series, which are rumored to be unveiled on January 17, 2024.
AI Live Translate Call: a personal translator on your phone
One of the most exciting features of Galaxy AI is the AI Live Translate Call, which will allow users to have a personal translator whenever they need it. This feature will be integrated into the native call feature, so the hassle of using third-party apps is gone, Samsung said.
AI Live Translate Call will provide both audio and text translations in real-time as users speak, and this will all happen on-device, so the contents of the conversations never leave the phone. This, Samsung says, makes calling someone who speaks another language about as simple as turning on closed captions when you stream a show.
Samsung has teased a video of how AI Live Translate Call works, showing a conversation between a Korean speaker and an English speaker. The video demonstrates how the feature can translate both the voice and the text of the speakers, and display them on the screen. The feature also supports speaker identification, so users can easily tell who is speaking.
Samsung has not revealed which languages will be supported by AI Live Translate Call, or how accurate the translations will be. However, the feature seems to be similar to Google’s Live Translate, which is currently exclusive to Pixel devices and supports 44 languages.
Samsung has also not announced when AI Live Translate Call will be available, or which Galaxy devices will support it. However, it is likely that the feature will be part of the Galaxy AI experience, and will be launched on the upcoming Galaxy S24 series.
Galaxy AI: a new era of innovation and communication
Samsung has been investing heavily in AI research and development, and has established seven global AI centers in Korea, the US, the UK, Canada, Russia, India, and China. Samsung has also been collaborating with various partners and platforms, such as Microsoft, Spotify, Netflix, and Google, to enhance its AI capabilities and services.
With Galaxy AI, Samsung aims to create a new era of innovation and communication, where users can enjoy a seamless and personalized mobile experience, powered by AI. Galaxy AI will also offer users the security and privacy they expect from Galaxy devices, as well as the openness and flexibility of Samsung’s ecosystem.
Samsung has not revealed much details about Galaxy AI, or what other features and services it will offer. However, it is clear that Samsung is determined to make AI a core part of its Galaxy brand, and to compete with other tech giants in the AI space.
