Samsung unveils a new foldable phone concept that can bend both ways

Samsung has showcased a new foldable phone concept at CES 2024 that can fold both inwards and outwards, eliminating the need for a separate external display. The concept, called In&Out Flip, is a possible future direction for the Galaxy Z Flip line of clamshell-style foldable phones.

The In&Out Flip concept features a single flexible display that can be folded up to 360 degrees, allowing the user to interact with the screen on both sides. When folded inwards, the device resembles a regular flip phone that can be opened to reveal a larger screen. When folded outwards, the device transforms into a compact smartphone that can be used on either side.

Samsung claims that the In&Out Flip concept achieves a sleeker and thinner design with a single display, compared to the current Galaxy Z Flip models that have a small external display for notifications and basic functions. The In&Out Flip concept also offers a new user experience that can adapt to different scenarios, such as taking selfies, watching videos, or browsing the web.

How durable is the In&Out Flip?

One of the main challenges of foldable phones is durability, as the repeated folding and unfolding of the screen can cause wear and tear over time. Samsung says that the In&Out Flip concept uses a durable and flexible material that can withstand various environmental conditions and physical stress.

According to Samsung, the In&Out Flip concept underwent several durability tests, such as folding tests at extreme temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius, water immersion tests, sand abrasion tests, and even basketball bouncing tests. Samsung says that the In&Out Flip concept can fold up to 350,000 times without any damage.

When will the In&Out Flip be available?

Samsung has not announced any plans to launch a commercial product based on the In&Out Flip concept. The concept is still in the research and development stage, and Samsung may need to overcome some technical and practical challenges before bringing it to the market. For example, Samsung may need to optimize the software and the user interface to support the dual-sided display, as well as ensure the battery life and the performance of the device.

However, Samsung has indicated that the In&Out Flip concept is a glimpse into the future of the Galaxy Z Flip line, which suggests that Samsung may eventually incorporate some of the features and technologies of the concept into its upcoming foldable phones. Samsung has been a pioneer and a leader in the foldable phone market, and the In&Out Flip concept shows that Samsung is not resting on its laurels, but rather exploring new possibilities and innovations for the foldable phone segment.
