Riot Blockchain, one of the largest bitcoin mining companies in the US, received US$31.7 million from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) for reducing its power consumption during the heat wave in August. The company voluntarily participated in the Emergency Response Service (ERS) program, which pays customers to reduce their electricity demand when the grid is under stress.
According to its quarterly report, Riot Blockchain reduced its power consumption by 97% at its Rockdale facility, which has a capacity of 750 megawatts. The company said that it was able to do so without affecting its bitcoin mining operations, as it had sufficient backup power from natural gas and diesel generators.
The company also said that it expects to receive additional payments from ERCOT for participating in the ERS program in September and October, as Texas continues to face power shortages due to extreme weather and aging infrastructure.
