Taco Bell Cantina in downtown Cleveland shuts down permanently

The Taco Bell Cantina, a unique restaurant that served alcohol along with tacos and burritos, has closed its doors in downtown Cleveland. The location, which opened in 2017, was the only one of its kind in Northeast Ohio.

A sign of closure

The closure was announced by a sign on the door of the restaurant, located at 184 Euclid Avenue, near Public Square. The sign thanked the customers for their support and suggested them to visit other nearby Taco Bell locations. The sign did not give any reason for the closure.

The Taco Bell Cantina was a special location that offered alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, sangria and frozen drinks. It also had a special menu that included shareable items such as nachos and quesadillas. The restaurant had a modern design and a digital menu board.

A rare concept

The Taco Bell Cantina concept was launched by the fast-food chain in 2015, with the first location opening in Chicago. The company aimed to target urban customers and millennials with the cantina concept, which was different from its traditional drive-thru locations.

According to the company’s website, there are currently 31 Taco Bell Cantina locations in the United States, mostly in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas. The Cleveland location was the sixth cantina to open in the country and the first one in Ohio.

A loss for downtown Cleveland

The closure of the Taco Bell Cantina is a loss for downtown Cleveland, which has been struggling with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its businesses and attractions. The restaurant was a popular late-night food option for residents and visitors, especially during events at Public Square.

The closure also leaves a vacant space in the historic May Company building, which is being renovated into apartments and retail space. The building is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The nearest Taco Bell locations to downtown Cleveland are in Steelyard Commons at 3314 Steelyard Drive and 13660 Euclid Avenue in East Cleveland. However, those locations do not serve alcohol or have the cantina menu.
