Why advertise with Newfound Times

Newfound Times reaches readers across a broad general news audience: people who follow business, the economy, politics, health, science, technology, sport, entertainment, and the wider world in one place. They come for reporting they can trust, and that trust is the thing your advertising sits next to. We protect it carefully, which is ultimately in your interest as much as ours, because advertising is worth more beside journalism people believe than beside content they have learned to ignore.

This page explains what we sell, how we keep advertising separate from the newsroom, and the categories we will not run at any price.

What we offer

Our advertising is mostly programmatic display, filled through the major exchanges, alongside a smaller amount of direct and sponsored placement for advertisers who want to work with us more closely. Options include the following.

  • Display advertising across the site, sold programmatically and, for direct buyers, in specific positions.
  • Newsletter sponsorship, a single clearly marked sponsor within an edition that goes to readers who chose to receive it.
  • Sponsored content, written to be useful and always labelled as sponsored so no reader mistakes it for our journalism.

If you have something in mind that is not on this list, ask. We would rather have a short conversation about whether an idea fits than force it into a format that suits neither of us.

What we will not run

Some categories are refused regardless of the money, because they damage readers or the trust we depend on. We do not accept advertising that is deceptive, that impersonates our own journalism, or that pretends to be a system alert or a news story. We also refuse the following.

  • Political and campaign advertising that hides who is paying for it.
  • Scams, fraudulent schemes, fake investment or cryptocurrency offers, and get rich quick pitches.
  • Illegal products and services, counterfeit goods, and anything promoting hatred or discrimination.
  • Misleading health, medical, or financial claims, including miracle cures and guaranteed returns.
  • Advertising aimed at children, and creative that has no business next to serious news.

We reserve the right to decline or remove any advertisement that we judge harmful, misleading, or simply wrong for our readers, and we do not owe a long explanation for protecting them.

Advertising and the newsroom are separate

Buying advertising buys advertising. It does not buy coverage, influence over coverage, or protection from it. Advertisers get no say over stories, no advance look at what we are publishing, and no veto. If your company becomes the subject of a story, we report it exactly as we would report any other company, and where it is relevant we disclose that you advertise with us. A request to pull or soften a story because of an advertising relationship will be declined, and it may itself become something we report.

This is not us being difficult. It is the whole basis on which our audience takes us seriously, which is the same audience you are paying to reach. The wider picture of how this separation works is on our ownership and funding page, and the rules the newsroom follows are in our editorial standards.

Labelling and reader data

Anything paid for is labelled so readers can tell it from our journalism. Sponsored content carries a clear sponsored label and is written not to imitate a news article. We will not disguise advertising as editorial, because a reader who feels tricked is a reader neither of us keeps.

Programmatic advertising involves cookies and identifiers set by the exchanges and their partners, subject to reader consent, and how that works and how readers control it is described in our cookie policy and our privacy policy. Direct advertisers are expected to comply with those same rules and with applicable advertising law.

Get in touch

To discuss advertising, sponsorship, or a partnership, write to support@newfoundtimes.com with ADVERTISING at the front of the subject line. Tell us what you are trying to achieve, your rough budget, and your timing, and we will tell you honestly whether we can help and how. Enquiries are handled on the business side, entirely separately from the desk that would cover you, and reaching out as an advertiser gives you no standing with the newsroom of any kind. General ways to reach us are on our contact page.
