Who we are
Newfound Times is an independent general news publication. We cover the world as it moves: business, the economy, entertainment, health, politics, science, sports, technology, and the wider international story. We are not a wire service reprinting the same feed as everyone else, and we are not a hobby blog with opinions dressed up as reporting. We sit in between, which is where most useful journalism actually happens.
The name is a small promise. A newfound fact is one you did not have a moment ago, checked and worth keeping. That is the bar we hold ourselves to on an ordinary Tuesday, not only on the days a big story breaks.
What we cover, and why the range is deliberate
Our sections are business, economy, entertainment, health, politics, science, sports, technology, and world. The spread is not an accident of ambition. Readers do not live inside a single beat. A change to interest rates lands on a household that also follows a league table, worries about a health guideline, and wants to know what a new phone actually does. A general newsroom that takes all of that seriously is more useful than nine narrow ones that do not talk to each other.
Breaking news is part of the job, but it is not the whole job. A headline tells you something happened. We would rather also tell you what it means, who it touches, and what is still unknown, because the second sentence is usually where the value is.
How we work
Most of what we publish starts from a primary source: an official statement, a filing, a set of figures, a court document, a transcript, a named person who was there. When we report a claim, we try to show you where it comes from so you can weigh it yourself. When we cannot confirm something, we say we cannot, rather than reaching for a confident verb we have not earned.
News and opinion are kept apart. A report is our best account of what is true. A comment piece is somebody arguing a case, and it is labelled so you are never left guessing which one you are reading. The rules behind all of this are written down, not left to habit, in our editorial standards and our fact-checking policy.
The team
We are a small independent editorial team. We do not publish a wall of staff photographs, partly because the group is lean and changes shape as stories demand, and partly because a masthead full of names is not what makes reporting trustworthy. The method is what makes it trustworthy, and the method is on these pages for anyone to check.
Small has costs and we will not pretend otherwise. We cannot be in every place at once, and we lean on official records, reputable reporting we can verify, and readers who tell us what is happening where they are. Small also has a benefit. There is no committee between a mistake and the correction of it, and nobody senior whose reputation is worth protecting more than the record.
Independence
Newfound Times is funded by advertising and answers to no political party, campaign, or outside owner steering the coverage. When a company we write about also buys advertising, that fact does not soften the story, and the reverse is equally true: a bad review is not for sale and neither is a good one. When we get it wrong
We will get things wrong. Everyone who publishes at the speed of the news does. What separates a serious publication from a careless one is what happens next. We correct openly, on the story itself, with a dated note saying what changed. We do not quietly rewrite a sentence and pretend it always read that way.
